Nidra is for setting intentions, relaxing fully, and allowing the world to move around us while we rest. Pratyahara is one of the 8 limbs of yoga (others include yoga postures, breathing exercises, and meditation). Pratyahara is sometimes referred to as "withdrawal of the senses." Unlike sense deprivation, like you would find in a float tank, we are not trying to shut off or ignore our senses. Instead, we are open to senses coming to us, without diverting our energy towards them. Without being drawn to the constant flow of our multi-sensory world, we can simply exist within it. Nidra helps with this practice, because although we are cultivating deep rest, we are also consciously awake and alert. We are attuned to the aliveness of our body.
